In 2017, my wife, the sculptor and glass artist Robin Cass, and I made our first full exhibition together, built around the message in a bottle. Robin brings a lifetime of mastery in glass. I bring typography. The show lives where the two meet: the bottle and the words inside it.
Thousands of sealed messages really were thrown into the ocean, and the ones that were found tell real stories of extreme risk, bad decisions, and bad luck. They’re an absurd, earnest attempt to communicate and be remembered.
Robin’s glass, my type and graphic narrative, and the artifacts we fabricated together invite viewers into the poetry of those messages, and maybe into their own stories of connection, adventure, loss, and hope. Making it side by side with an artist I’ve admired for as long as I’ve known her is one of the projects I’m proudest of.
